Scott Sarvay

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Steuben County authorities say they have shut down a door-to-door search for a disabled man who they believe wandered away from his family's home at Snow Lake early Sunday morning.

They are still asking for the public's help as to the whereabouts of 48-year-old Stuart Stalcup.

He'd been living with his older parents since December when he suffered a debilitating stroke.

Police say Stalcup, who is an insulin dependent diabetic, may have taken a box of insulin with him, but it's not clear if he'd remember to take the medicine.

Steuben County Detective Dale Murray says, “I think it's important that we get the word out and see if there's anybody can help us at this point. I think the area has gotten so vast that now we're just kind of hoping for people and a phone call."

If you have any information, you're urged to call the Steuben County Sheriff's Department at (260) 665- 3131

Steuben stroke victim vanishes
Silver Alert out; he has diabetes but no insulin

October 12, 2009
Holly Abrams
The Journal Gazette

A Silver Alert was issued Sunday afternoon for a man who went missing from his family’s Steuben County lake home the same day.

Meanwhile, his family said they have few answers as to why 48-year-old Stuart Stalcup went missing. Stalcup disappeared from his family’s home along Snow Lake in Fremont between 12 and 6 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Stalcup is 5-foot-8 and weighs 160 pounds. He has balding dark hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a plaid flannel shirt, blue jeans and a blue and yellow vest. He was last seen traveling on foot, according to Steuben County sheriff’s deputies.

Stalcup, of Wichita, Kan., has been living in Fort Wayne with his parents since suffering from a stroke in December, said his father, Robert Stalcup. The family was staying at their lake home in Fremont this weekend, he said.

The last time they saw their son was at bedtime Saturday night, Robert Stalcup said. His son, who has severe diabetes, was scheduled to eat breakfast and take an insulin shot at 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

When Robert awoke, his son was missing from his bedroom. The family does not suspect any type of entry to the home – saying Stalcup left on his own accord. He does not have insulin with him, Robert Stalcup said. Robert Stalcup said the family does not know why he would leave or where he went.

“I don’t know for sure if he has identification on him,” he said, adding that “it would be a little difficult for him to convey where he lives.”

Stuart Stalcup, who had not been found as of 10 p.m. Sunday, has a speech impairment, his father said.

The Silver Alert system mirrors the current Amber Alert system for missing children. Activated in July, the Silver Alert covers adults with dementia who go missing – along with anyone else considered to be an endangered adult. That could be someone incapable of returning without assistance because of a mental illness, mental retardation or another physical or mental incapacity.

High-risk missing people, those who require medical attention, are also covered under Silver Alerts.

Authorities have launched a mounted search and rescue and a K-9 search to try to find Stalcup. Anyone with information on Stalcup’s disappearance should call deputies at 260-665-3131.

Body found in Steuben County; believed to be man who disappeared Oct. 11

Fri. Nov. 06, 2009
Nick West
The News-Sentinel

The body of a missing Fort Wayne man was located Thursday about 1.6 miles from where he was last seen.

The clothing and general characteristics along with some identification of a deceased male have led the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office to believe they found the body of Stuart Stalcup, 48, who went missing near Snow Lake in Fremont on Oct. 11. An autopsy and further investigation to complete identification will be conducted this morning.

A Silver Alert was issued after Stalcup’s disappearance about three weeks ago, and cancelled at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Indiana State Police.

Stalcup recently suffered a stroke and was an insulin dependent diabetic.

Silver Alerts are issued for adults incapable of returning to their residence without assistance due to a mental illness, dementia, or other physical or mental incapacity, or who are in danger such as a victim of a threat of violence or disappeared under dangerous circumstances.

Indiana State Police Pilot Mike Harris believed he located the body in a wooded area south of SR 120 in the area of CR 225 West. Harris notified the sheriff’s department, who then recovered the body.

Prior to Thursday, a plane was not available for search use, according to a news release.

Body identified as missing Fremont man

Friday, 06 Nov 2009,

FREMONT, Ind. (WANE) - Police say a body found Thursday in Steuben County is that of a man who went missing October 11 in Fremont.

Stuart Stalcup, 48, was last seen October 10th at his parent's lake cottage in Fremont. His parents say they were watching a football game late Saturday night, and when they woke up Sunday morning, Stalcup was gone. Stalcup recently had a stroke that affected his memory and communication. He is an insulin dependent diabetic.

An Indiana State Police airplane discovered a body near SR 120 about a mile west of SR 127 in Steuben County around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The plane was searching for Stalcup and was not available before Thursday. A ground crew picked up the body and confirmed it was a man.

The clothing description and some identification lead police to believe the body is Stalcup's, but that is pending final confirmation from an autopsy and dental records.

"After two or three weeks, we were sort of figuring that probably it was not going to be a good turnout here," Steuben County Sheriff Richard Lewis told NewsChannel 15. "Barring some extreme circumstances that no one has seen, I would think that it's going to be the subject."
