| Rally for missing Fremont boy draws crowd to Oakland police headquarters By Kristin Bender Oakland Tribune 02/10/2010
OAKLAND -- About 20 people attended a candlelight vigil in front of the Oakland Police Department on Wednesday night to mark six months since the disappearance of Hasanni Campbell.
The Fremont boy, now 6, was reported missing Aug. 10 from the rear driveway of Shuz, a shoe store in the Rockridge neighborhood. The boy's foster father, Louis Ross, 38, told police he left the boy alone while he went to the front of the store to alert the boy's foster mother and aunt, Jennifer Campbell, 30, that he had arrived to drop off Hasanni's 1-year-old sister. The girl is now in protective custody.
Wednesday night's rally was organized by The Citizens for the Lost, a group cofounded by Sherri-Lyn Miller and Courtney Tascoe-Burris. The group has held fundraisers, vigils and searches since the boy went missing.
"It's really enlightening to see you all here," said Tascoe-Burris, daughter of attorney John Burris, who was advising the foster parents for a short time. "All of us are here for a common purpose, because of a little boy lost."
Police have said they are investigating Hasanni's disappearance as a homicide. In late August, police arrested Ross and Campbell on suspicion of murder. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office later declined to file criminal charges, and the two were released from jail.
Neither has been available for comment for several months. The couple has split up, and Ross has moved out of state, authorities said. Campbell's whereabouts are unknown, said Advertisement her mother, Pamela Clark, 62. Clark was at the vigil briefly Wednesday night.
Police said the case remains under investigation.
"We have never stopped investigating it. With the level of evidence, witness statements and canvasses, there's a massive level of information that's coming in on this investigation," said Oakland police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason. "We're still pursuing this case, and we're not going to stop pursuing it until there's closure."
Anyone with information about Hasanni's disappearance may call Oakland police at 510-777-3211 or 510-238-7934, or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572. There is a $75,000 reward for information leading to Hasanni's whereabouts. http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_14373992

| Volunteers Search For Hasanni Campbell In Clayton, Plan Vigil
OAKLAND, Calif. -- A group of volunteers has traveled to Clayton Wednesday afternoon to follow up on a psychic's tip on the whereabouts of Hasanni Campbell, a 6-year-old who went missing in Oakland nearly six months ago, a search organizer said.
Hasanni was reported missing by his foster father, 38-year-old Louis Ross, who said the boy disappeared Aug. 10 from a car parked outside a shoe store in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood.
Oakland police have said they are investigating Hasanni's disappearance as a homicide.
In August, police arrested Ross and 30-year-old Jennifer Campbell, Hasanni's aunt and foster mother, but the district attorney's office declined to file charges because of insufficient evidence.
San Leandro business owner Sherri-Lyn Miller has been organizing searches, vigils and fundraisers for Hasanni. About a dozen volunteers are conducting another search this afternoon based on a tip from Sam Herbert, a Berkeley-based psychic, Miller said.
The group searched an area in the 13000 block of Marsh Creek Road in Clayton between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, she said.
After they were arrested, Ross and Campbell stopped attending events and are no longer speaking with the media, according to Miller, who has interacted with other family members since then.
In early January, the foster parents moved out of the Fremont home where Hasanni lived with them, said Ritu Khurana, the real estate agent who owns the home.
Miller, who recently established the group Citizens For the Lost to search for missing children, is also organizing a rally next week to mark the six-month anniversary of Hasanni's disappearance.
The rally will be held Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. outside Oakland Police Department headquarters at 455 Seventh St.
People wishing to take part can come by the Citizens For the Lost headquarters at 15976 E. 14th St. in San Leandro between noon and 6 p.m. Saturday to make signs or T-shirts for the rally, Miller said.
She said the rally is not meant to protest police, who are continuing to investigate Hasanni's disappearance.
"Right now we're very confident in the police," Miller said. "They're keeping everything close to the vest but I know they're on top of it."

| Hasanni Campbell We understand that there is a lot of speculation out there due to misconceptions about our family and the environment Hasanni was living in but to us he is a son, a brother, a family member and so much more and not just a foster child
This site is for our son so that people can see him for what he was, a child who is an integral part of our home and our hearts.
Born on September 24, 2003, the first few of years of his life were not the most ideal but that withstanding there is a potential in him that many overlook because of a lack of understanding about his condition. Diagnosed with Cognitive Delays and Cerebral Palsy, an unbrella term used to describe a disease that affects a person's motor skills, Hasanni is not unlike any other child. Some of his favorite things are SpongeBob, Spiderman, playing in the little pool we have set up in the backyard, and being read to. Hasanni loves the water. He would always ask, is it going to rain today? or Is that the beach as we drove home?
If you saw him you would most likely think of him as a child small for his age that would seem talkative or quiet depending on his mood at that time.
The past few months during summer break Hasanni was learning to write his ABC's and his name for the first time by himself. He was developing a relationship with his younger sister and learning what it meant to be a big brother, and by all accounts thriving and blossoming into a fine young man.
So as his parents, family, and the extended community that knew him we ask that you join us in our efforts to bring our son home.

| Chief Batts: Hasanni Campbell Case Still A Priority
OAKLAND, Calif. -- At a monthly hearing to discuss the Oakland Police Department’s battle to reduce crime in the troubled city, Chief Anthony Batts said the investigation into the disappearance of Hasanni Campbell more than seven months ago "continues to be a priority" for the department.
Batts said, "There are some leads we're following up on and I hope they lead to a conclusion soon."
Deputy Chief Jeffrey Israel said the department recently partnered with the Alameda County sheriff's search and rescue team to try to find the missing Fremont boy -- who has cerebral palsy -- but was unable to locate him.
Israel declined to say what area was searched. Previously there were several other unsuccessful searches for Hasanni. Some were conducted by law enforcement officials and some were conducted by volunteers.
Hasanni was 5 years old at the time he was reported missing from the parking lot of Shuz of Rockridge in the 600 block of College Avenue in Oakland at about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 and his sixth birthday was Sept. 24.
Hasanni lived in Fremont with his foster parents, Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell, and another child.
Oakland police arrested Ross and Campbell on Aug. 28 but the Alameda County District Attorney's office said several days later that it wouldn't file charges against them because of insufficient evidence.

| Safety fair to mark 11 months since Hasanni Campbell disappeared July 7, 2010 By Kristin Bender Oakland Tribune OAKLAND The organization that continues the search for Hasanni Campbell will hold a child safety fair Saturday to mark the 11 months he has been missing. Hasanni, who was born with cerebral palsy, was 5 when he was reported missing Aug. 10 from the rear driveway of Shuz of Rockridge, a shoe store on College Avenue. The Fremont boy's then-foster father, Louis Ross, told police he left the child alone when he went to the front of the store to alert Jennifer Campbell, the boy's aunt and then-foster mother, that he had arrived to drop off Hasanni and the boy's 1-year-old sister. The boy has not been seen since. The couple lost custody of the girl and have not been seen or heard from in many months. It is believed they have left the area. Citizens for the Lost, a nonprofit established after Hasanni's disappearance, is teaming up with the East Bay Chevs Car Club for a car show, safety fair and barbecue from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church, 5951 College Ave. All proceeds will go toward the continuing search for Hasanni, organizer Sherri-Lyn Miller said. "Don't we owe it to Hasanni to remember him and involve the community to find a resolution in his case?" she said. "Ultimately, we don't want to forget that this marks 11 months since he's been gone. Not only are people coming out to learn child safety but to remember that this boy is still is missing." Miller said that if Hasanni is not found, the group will be back next month to mark the anniversary at the Oakland police station, where they held a candlelight vigil and rally this year. Shortly after the boy went missing, Ross and Campbell were jailed on suspicion of murder for a few days. They were released when Alameda County prosecutors declined to file charges. Since the disappearance, many searches have been held in Oakland, Berkeley and Fremont, and monthly vigils have been held on the 10th of each month. | San Leandro spa hosts benefit to raise money to continue search for Hasanni Campbell By Kristin Bender Oakland Tribune Posted: 09/03/2010 SAN LEANDRO -- Elisa Aguilera's daughter was 17 when she was shot to death in December of 2008. The teen's 19-year-old boyfriend was arrested and later convicted of her murder. Last week, Armando Vera was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the slaying of Melissa Lopez, Aguilera said. The loss of a child to violence is a pain few parents can comprehend. So to honor the memory of her daughter, Aguilera, the owner of Elle Salon and Spa in San Leandro, is hosting a fundraiser Sunday to support the organization working to find Hasanni Campbell -- the Fremont boy who went missing more than a year ago. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, the salon will have raffles, a barbecue, beauty treatments and beauty supplies available for purchase, children's activities and free popcorn. Men's haircuts will be available for $10. The salon is at 197 Pelton Center Way in San Leandro. For more information, call 510-352-7445. Aguilera is donating all proceeds from Sunday to the CFL Society. http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_15986844 | |
