Man arrested in death of Cartwright girl, 11

CARTWRIGHT — A 34-year-old man was arrested this evening in the killing of an 11-year-old Cartwright girl, an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman said.
Jason Lee Belew, 34, was arrested on a first-degree murder complaint, OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said. Dakota Cheyenne Hughes was found dead about 4 a.m. today at an aunt's house next door to her home.
She had been watching movies with the man late Saturday night, said her father, Bill Hughes. The aunt woke up and found Dakota dead in a back bedroom and the man was gone.
Brown said Belew was from the Grayson County, Texas, area. He was arrested earlier Sunday on a criminal mischief warrant. He was booked into the Grayson County jail.
Brown did not give information on how the girl died.
Cartwright is a small town on the Red River southwest of Durant in Bryan County.
“She was a sweet little girl. She was friendly to everybody, a sweet kid,” Bill Hughes said of his daughter. “She was a good girl in school. She was friends with everybody.”
Dakota was a sixth-grader at Colbert Elementary School in Colbert, he said. Dakota was found dead at 375 Dogwood Trail, Brown said.
Bill Hughes said his daughter was watching movies with a friend at her aunt's house next door Saturday night.
“She (Dakota) had a friend that came over and watched movies with her,” Hughes said. “When she (Dakota's aunt) woke up earlier this morning she found her in the back bedroom.”
Hughes said he didn't know the friend personally and that Dakota had known him for about a month. “It's hard to put in words,” Hughes said. “I just can't understand how somebody could be so sick to do something.”

The girl's nude body was found beaten and strangled about 4 a.m. Sunday at her aunt's house in Cartwright.
Jason Lee Belew, 34, who is being held in the Grayson County, Texas, jail.
Belew was charged today with murder in Bryan County District Court, said District Attorney Emily Redman.
Redman said it is too soon to know whether she will seek the death penalty in the case.

CARTWRIGHT, OK--The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says an 11-year old girl was found dead near (next door) her Cartwright home early Sunday morning. Now a 34-year-old Sherman man is in the Grayson County Jail awaiting extradition back to Bryan County where he faces charges for the murder of the girl.
According to O.S.B.I. spokesperson Jessica Brown, Dakota Cheyenne Hughes was staying at her aunt's home next door for the weekend. Brown says Hughes' death is still under investigation and the medical examiner will determine a cause of death. Brown says there are signs of trauma but did not give specifics.
Brown says authorities arrested 34-year old Jason Lee Belew (pictured, right) of Sherman on an unrelated warrant for criminal mischief on Sunday in Grayson County. He was held on that charge until later evening when he was officially charged with first degree murder. Brown says the man is being held in the Grayson County Jail.
Brown said Monday the next step is for Belew to go before a Grayson County judge for an extradition hearing. Depending on the outcome of that court proceeding, eventually he will be brought back to Bryan County to face the murder charge.
On Monday, the Grayson County Sheriff's Office confirmed bond was set at $1 million (out of Bryan County, Oklahoma) by Justice of the Peace Butch Morgan. Belew signed a waiver to have the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office or the OSBI to take him back to face murder charges. He remains in the Grayson County Jail at this time.

Services held for slain Cartwright girl

CARTWRIGHT, Okla. — An 11-year-old girl killed at a relative's home in Cartwright is being laid to rest.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Cartwright for Dakota Cheyenne Hughes, and a graveside service followed at a cemetery in Pilot Point, Texas.
Her body was found last Sunday at her aunt's home in Cartwright, and the state medical examiner's office says she likely was strangled.
A friend of the aunt — 34-year-old Jason Lee Belew — was arrested later that day in Sherman, Texas. He's being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge, and prosecutors have indicated they plan to seek the death penalty.
