Jonathan Frazier Admits to Killing Baby Cecil After Feeling 'Frustrated and Overwhelmed'
By Pete Kotz
Sep. 2 2009
Baby Cecil
‚ÄčLast Thursday, Brooke K. Johnson of Ferndale, Washington reported to jail to begin serving time for a robbery conviction. Her husband, Jonathan V. Frazier, spent that night drinking with neighbors at the family's double-wide trailer. He would later tell police he put his two-month-old son Cecil to bed that night, only to wake up the next morning to find him gone.

Detectives and hundreds of volunteers spent last weekend searching for the child. But it ended Sunday when Frazier changed his story. He now claimed he'd fallen off his bed during the night and woke to find Cecil suffocated under him. It wasn't the best story for a man with previous meth-related convictions. But as you can guess by now, Jonathan V. Frazier did not graduate with a physics degree from Yale...

He told a relative he panicked, so he wrapped the child in a blanket and left him in the driveway of his wife's ex-boyfriend, hoping to frame the guy for the slaying. But when police examined the body, injuries to Cecil's head looked nothing like accidental suffocation.

According to police, Frazier has now confessed to killing the child. He says he was frustrated and overwhelmed after his wife left for prison without making child care arrangements. So he swung Cecil into a door, a wall and a bed frame, reports the Bellingham Herald.

Lucky for him, this seeming act of drunken rage has saved him from first-degree murder charges. Because prosecutors don't believe they can prove the slaying was premeditated, Frazier has been charged with second degree murder.

Prosecutor: Custer infant's injuries do not match father's story
ZOE FRALEY - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

http://www.bellinghamherald.com

Read the comments section, mother lost custody of other children prior to this

A prosecutor said a Custer man's accounts of his infant son's death did not match what an autopsy found.

During Jonathan Vincent Frazier's first court appearance Monday, Aug. 31, Chief Criminal Deputy Mac Setter said the autopsy found no signs of asphyxiation.

Frazier, 42, had first claimed his 2-month-old son, Jon "Cecil" Anthony Frazier, was missing from their trailer in the 1100 block of Willey's Lake Road when he awoke Friday.

By Sunday, Frazier had changed his story, saying he woke up to find the boy underneath him, suffocated by his body, according to Setter of the Whatcom County Prosecutor's Office.

However, an autopsy found a broken left femur and massive blunt trauma to the back of the head.
Setter said the injuries would be consistent with the baby being swung by his leg into a fixed object.
Frazier shook his head as Setter described the injuries.

Frazier previously admitted to having been drinking Thursday night, the last time anyone saw his son alive. He also claimed to have woken up in the night to feed the baby, Setter said, though there was nothing found in the boy's stomach during the autopsy.

Setter said Frazier attempted to explain the injuries by saying that in his rush out of the trailer to take the boy to the hospital, he tripped over a table and hit the boy's head. Frazier also told authorities that after he got lost on the way to the hospital, he instead left the boy's body in a field by the home of his wife's ex-boyfriend, whom he hoped would be blamed.

Authorities found the body Sunday in a wooded area off the 7100 block of Dahlberg Road.
Frazier was stoic as Whatcom County Superior Court Commissioner H. Edwin Simmers set his bail at $1 million. Frazier has been jailed since Sunday night on suspicion of second-degree murder.
His arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 11, and criminal charges likely will be filed Tuesday, Sept. 1, Setter said.

The day before the infant was reported missing, his mother, Brooke Kay Johnson, 26, reported to Whatcom County Jail, where she awaits transfer to a state prison for a robbery conviction. Johnson, who is married to Frazier, declined to be interviewed Monday.

Frazier has been convicted of four felonies - most of them related to possession of and intent to sell drugs such as methamphetamine - as well as many misdemeanors such as theft and driving under the influence. He has failed to appear in court seven times for other crimes, and Setter said this and his danger to society led to the $1 million bail.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A man accused in the brutal death of his infant son pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges Friday morning.
The accused father, John Vincent Frazier, showed very little emotion at the hearing in Whatcom County Superior Court as he heard the charge and entered his plea.

But outside the courthouse, it was a completely different story - emotions were running high as citizens remembered the young life at the center of the court case.

"It's really rocked the community," said one woman, Rachel Kennedy. "Everybody has felt the loss of this child's life."

"We want to remember the baby," she added.

Along the sidewalk outside the courthouse, Kennedy and other community members held a vigil for the 2-month-old infant, Jon Anthony Frazier - or "Cecil," as he was called.

The baby's photo was there, along with ribbons and candles placed in his memory.

Baby Cecil's small, broken body was found in a wooded area near Ferndale last month.

According to police, the boys's father first claimed he woke up to find the boy was missing from their trailer.

Then, a few days later, prosecutors say, his story changed. Frazier allegedly told police he woke up with the boy suffocated underneath him.

But after an autopsy, prosecutors said Frazier's story didn't add up, because the baby's injuries didn't match the account Frazier gave of the circumstances surrounding the boy's death.

Authorities believe the baby was swung by his leg and hit in the head.

The gory details are too much for some community members to handle. So rather than looking back, they said they're looking forward.

"We don't want to concentrate on how this happened. We want to concentrate on why it happened and reach out to the community so maybe we can save one child's life," Kennedy said.

Vigil organizers handed out flyers about child abuse statistics to support groups and reaching out for help. They're trying to do anything to prevent this from happening again.

"We wanted to be able to get the word out and make sure this doesn't happen to any other child again," said organizer Stefanie Smith. "With all the resources that are here, there's no excuse for a child's life to end in death."
