Mental exam next for accused grandmother
June 24, 2009

By Norb Franz, Macomb Daily Staff Writer

Robin Yorke not only carries wonderful memories of her 4-year-old daughter in her mind, she now has them on her arm.

Yorke, the mother of slain Linda Marie Steele, recently got a tattoo with Linda's name, angel wings, paws of a kitten — Linda's favorite animal — and the words: "In the arms of an Angel's soul."

Linda's maternal grandmother, Dawn Yorke, who is charged with murdering the little Warren girl earlier this month in their home, was ordered Tuesday by a judge to undergo a psychiatric examination.

The 51-year-old grandmother, who is charged with first- and second-degree murder for her granddaughter's death, appeared confused but acknowledged in 37th District Court that she didn't object to her lawyer's request for the mental evaluation for her.

Defense attorney Daniel Garon told Judge Jennifer Faunce that after talking with Dawn Yorke, he considered it "imperative" that psychiatrists determine whether Yorke is competent to stand trial, and whether the Warren woman was culpable for her alleged criminal action toward Linda on June 11.

Outside the courthouse, Garon told reporters he doubted that Yorke understood

the brief proceeding.

Warren police allege that Yorke claimed she used a pillow to try to suffocate her granddaughter in a bed before fatally strangling the girl with her hands. The detective in charge of the case, Cpl. Mark Okray, has said Yorke told him she was trying to protect her daughter from being cut up by the girl's father and his associates — an assertion that investigators said is baseless.

In a case that may be the first of its kind in Macomb County — with a grandparent accused of murdering his or her own grandchild — Yorke showed no emotion and appeared to make little eye contact with family members seated in Faunce's courtroom.

"It's like she was just stone cold," said Linda's father, John Steele, afterward. "She loved Linda — that's why we can't understand it. My heart goes out to her family as well. They lost her."

A court hearing could be held in approximately three months for the defense, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office and the judge to review whether Yorke can assist her attorney in her own defense. If she is deemed incompetent to stand trial, Yorke would be hospitalized and re-evaluated at a later date.

Relatives have said she has suffered from paranoid schizophrenia for about 15 years and recently was taking her medication.

The death of their only child has made it difficult for John Steele and Robin Yorke to continue residing at the house on Packard Avenue where their daughter was strangled. Dawn Yorke also lived with them, and the couple had hoped to buy the house under a land contract, a relative said.

Since Linda's death, the grieving parents have only stopped there when necessary and are staying with other family members, said Jean Malik, John Steele's sister.

Approximately 500 people — many of them strangers — came to the funeral home to offer condolences. John Steele estimated about 250 attended the funeral service.

"I'm sure Linda was looking down from heaven, smiling, knowing how many people she touched," said Steele, who recently got "Best of Both Worlds" — his daughter's favorite Hannah Montana song — tattooed on his upper back.

To help the family defray funeral costs, contributions can be made to the Linda Marie Steele Fund at any branch of TCF Bank. Also, a pancake fundraiser will be held 4-6 p.m. Friday at Warren City Hall. Donation is $7 for adults; $5 for anyone over age 60; and $3 for kids 5 and under.
