The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office and Milton-Freewater School District are helping an area mother find her missing daughter.

The mother, Sara Nye, told authorities and the school district her daughter, Miranda Nye, 12, has been missing since Nov. 25.

Sheriff John Trumbo said he believes Miranda may be a runaway. He said she's taken off in the past, usually staying at relatives' or friends' houses. But this time no one has been able to find her and he said no relatives have seen her.

"Based on that and the fact she's been gone a week, we'll dig into it a little deeper and make sure its not more serious than a runaway situation," Trumbo said. "Hopefully that's all it is."

On Wednesday Trumbo sent two detectives to Milton-Freewater, where the girl is from. At the end of the day he said they hadn't learned much more.

The Milton-Freewater School District Web site hosts a flier picturing Miranda, one her mother brought to the district office, said Superintendent Marilyn McBride.

Miranda attended fourth grade at Ferndale Elementary, but this year was learning from home through an online program not affiliated with the school district, McBride said. McBride said she lived in the Ferndale area, but outside city limits, which is why the sheriff's office is investigating.

According to a sheriff's office release, Miranda was last seen wearing a dark blue and pink checkered fleece pajama top and light blue pin-striped pajama pants. She also wore brown suede cowgirl boots with green and white flower cut-outs. She was riding a light blue bicycle and wasn't wearing a coat or sweater.

If anyone has information about Miranda, they can call the sheriff's office dispatch at 541-966-3651 or call 9-1-1.

The East Oregonian attempted to contact the girl's mother, but did not receive a return call by press time.

Authorities continue the search for a 12-year-old girl who disappeared last week.

Umatilla County Sheriff's Detective David Williamson said that Miranda Nye was last seen at her home on or about Nov. 26.

Nye appears to have ridden her bicycle from her home with a backpack filled with some of her belongings. Another bag with items inside was found outside her bedroom window. Nye left no indication of where she may have been going, Williamson said.

Later that morning, her family discovered she had left on her bicycle and contacted authorities. Nye was initially listed as a runaway, but the investigation has shifted given the length of her disappearance, Williamson said.

"It's been long enough that obviously we're concerned for her well-being," she said.

Nye has dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen near her home along Crisp Lane, near Ferndale Road outside Milton-Freewater. She attended Stateline Seventh-day Adventist School but was being home-schooled this year, Williamson said.

Anyone who may have seen Miranda or has information should call Umatilla County dispatch at 541-966-3651

Herald staff

COLLEGE PLACE A Milton-Freewater girl missing since before Thanksgiving after apparently running away from home has been found safe, authorities said today.

Miranda Nye, 12, who also uses the name Miranda Richardson, was in a house in College Place at 1:30 p.m. today, the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office said.

She was found unharmed when the sheriff’s office and College Place police served a search warrant at a home, authorities said.

Additional details were not immediately released about what led law enforcement to the home or about how Miranda got there.

Detectives previously said it appeared Miranda packed a bag and left home on her bicycle. Foul play was not suspected in her disappearance.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.
