Police seek help finding missing girl, mother

Bakersfield police are looking for Nancy Escobar and Amanda Escobar. Call police at 327-7111, Bakersfield police have asked for the public's help in finding an 8-year-old girl and her mother who have been missing since Oct. 14.

Nancy Escobar, 48, and her daughter, Amanda, have been missing since they were evicted from a condominium that they were renting on Nottingham Drive near Ming Avenue and Ashe Road.

A strange twist in the case is that Escobar's family didn't know of her financial problems until it was too late. The family has since paid her back rent and other debts, said private investigator Riley Parker, who was hired by the family.

"Here is a woman who is homeless and doesn't have to be," Parker said.

Police reported that the mother suffers from an undiagnosed mental problem and possibly has a physical illness. That's why the daughter may be at risk, police said.

The girl, who will turn 9 years old in the next week, has never been enrolled in school, Parker said.

Her mother has never obtained authorization to home school her child, he said.

The mother and daughter typically stayed in their condominium until after 2:30 p.m. -- the time school would have been let out -- and then they boarded a bus on Ming Avenue to Valley Plaza or the Marketplace, Parker said.

Child Protective Services learned about the schooling problem for Amanda and tried to contact her mother, Parker said. It may be that the mother has gone into deeper hiding to stay away from CPS, he said.

Escobar has two other older children who have earlier been removed from her care, Parker said.

But her family has offered to help her, Parker said.

She has not been in contact with any member of her family since Oct. 14, he said.

Parker searched local shelters and charity centers without any results.

The girl is 4-foot-7, 85 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. The mother is 5-foot-4, 115 pounds,, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 327-7111. Parker also has information about her family and can be reached at 635-0633.
