Missing child last seen with 'person of interest' in Olathe homicide

Olathe police are trying to find a three-year-old boy who was last known to be with a person of interest in an Olathe homicide.

Police have placed the child, Carlos Angel Villegas III, in the nationwide missing-endangered database.

An Amber Alert has not been issued because it does not appear the child was abducted, police said.

Carlos is about 38 inches tall and weighs about 45 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Carlos was last seen with Maurice O. Stewart, 22.

Police found the body of a 57-year-old man just before 8 a.m. Tuesday at a motel in the 200 block of East Fleming Road after a call came in about a medical emergency.

Investigators ruled the death a homicide, but had not released how the man died. Police were withholding the name of the victim until relatives are notified, they said.

Tuesday afternoon they named Stewart and a Stephanie Laguna, 19, as people of interest in the homicide.

However, late Tuesday, police said they were no longer looking for Laguna. Police have contacted her and her whereabouts are known.

Stewart is black, 6 feet 1 inch tall and 195 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Photos of both Stewart and the child have been released.

The public is asked to call the Olathe police at 913-971-7455 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Stewart should not be approached, Olathe police Sgt. John Roland said.

In the other homicide, Johnson County prosecutors on Monday charged Jorge Rodriguez-Hernandez, 29, with first-degree murder in the death of Asuncion Delgado-Lopez, 50.

The two were roommates at an apartment on the 1600 block of East Cedar Place, where Delgado-Lopez was found dead Sunday. She died from asphyxiation, authorities said.

Fernando Diaz, a neighbor who lived in another apartment at the complex, said Delgado-Lopez was a longtime resident who worked two jobs. Rodriguez-Hernandez had moved in with her two or three months ago, he said.

Before these latest homicides, the last murder in Olathe was in June 2008, when Alphonse Jackson shot Rodney Butner Jr. to death.

Police Seek Missing Child, Person Of Interest In Olathe Slaying

OLATHE, Kan. -- Olathe police said they are now searching for a 3-year-old boy they believe might be with a person of interest in the death of a man at an Econolodge Hotel on Tuesday morning.

Police said Tuesday night they are looking for Maurice O. Stewart, 22. Stewart is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs 195 pounds, has black hair and brown eyes. Police are not sure what type of vehicle Stewart may be in.

Early Wednesday morning police said they were seeking the public's assistance locating a three year old child last known to be with Stewart. The child is Carlos Angel Villegas III. The child was entered into the nationwide database as missing-endangered.

Police said it does not appear the child was abducted, so it does not qualify for an Amber Alert. Villegas is between 34 and 38 inches tall, weighs 30 to 45 pounds, has black hair a brown eyes.

Police had been looking to contact 19-year-old Stephanie Laguna as a person of interest, but made contact with her. Police also said they are no longer seeking the 2003 Chevy Impala they had released Tuesday.

The man found dead was found at 7:53 a.m. Tuesday in a room at the hotel at 209 E. Flaming Road, police said. They are waiting to release the man's name pending notification of the family.

The manager of the Econolodge spoke Wednesday morning about what happened Tuesday morning.

“I grabbed the pass key, we go upstairs, and he’s laying there in a pool of blood on the floor," night manager Barry Trussell said. "At that point, I went and called 911 then the whole horrible circus has began.”

Trussell said he was shocked walking into the scene and couldn't tell exactly what happened.

"I gotta call the cops right now," Trussell said he thought. "This guy looks dead. He was laying face down in a pool of blood and you couldn't see what happened. You could just see the blood and him laying there."

Police said Wednesday they had Maurice O. Stewart, 22, in custody in the Sedgwick County Jail in Wichita. He is considered a person of interest in the death of 57-year-old Stephen L. Cook, a California construction worker.

Earlier on Wednesday, police said they found a missing a 3-year-old boy in good condition in Kansas City, Mo., after they believed he was with Stewart. Police said they thought Carlos Angel Villegas III might be with Stewart.

Villegas was dropped off in good condition on Wednesday morning near the reStart homeless shelter, police said. Villegas is the son of 19-year-old Stephanie Laguna, who was also listed as a person of interest in the case on Tuesday night. She was in police custody Wednesday awaiting charges.

Villegas' grandmother said Wednesday that Stewart was Laguna's boyfriend.
