| Elizabeth Olten, 9, ST. MARTINS, Mo. 10/21/09 Mo. girl, 9, missing after visiting friend http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/new...7?OpenDocumentST. MARTINS, Mo. — Cole County authorities are looking for a 9-year-old girl who did not return home after visiting a friend. Cole County Sheriff Greg White says Elizabeth Olten did not arrive home Wednesday evening after leaving a friend's home about 6:15 p.m. She was supposed to walk a quarter mile to her home on Route D near St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. Her family called police when she had not arrived by 7 p.m. A Cole County sheriff's deputy says the search was scheduled to resume early Thursday. The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports that the girl's family members said she is afraid of the woods and the dark, so she wouldn't be out at night. Elizabeth Olten has long brown hair and was last seen wearing a pink sweater, T-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes

| http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&so...ed=0CBAQ8gEwAABut here is another article: http://www.newstribune.com/articles/...2694256245.txt*snipped* Neighbors told reporters that Olten, who attends Pioneer Trail Elementary in Apache Flats, knows the area, and they didn't believe she would simply wander off. Family members told reporters that Elizabeth is afraid of the woods as well as the dark so she wouldn't be out at night. Authorities got the call from Elizabeth's family around 7 p.m. and they along with their neighbors began searching nearby yards, fields and ditches using flashlights to help guide their way. A command post was set up at Xtreme Body and Paint, near the girl's home, and approximately 50 members of various law enforcement and emergency response agencies came to the scene. Some of the members stayed with the mobile command unit at the post while the rest were sent out to search on foot in an area approximately half-a-mile by half-a-mile in size. Some of these members also carried mobile infra-red units to try to find any heat signatures in the woods. Later in the evening, a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter, also equipped with infra-red equipment, searched the area. | |

| Search under way for 9-year-old mid-Missouri girl
Onna Adrian, whose daughter-in-law is Elizabeth's older sister, said Elizabeth generally walked home from the friend's house through neighbors' yards rather than along the two-lane county highway that runs past their houses.
Adrian said Elizabeth did not normally hide out and, if confronted, would have screamed and tried to run away.
"She is very shy," Adrian said. "She's not the type to get in a vehicle with anybody."
Elizabeth, who has long brown hair and brown eyes, is about 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs 102 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pink scarf, sweater and T-shirt with butterflies, blue jeans and white shoes.
Adrian said the girl's mother did not want to talk to a reporter Thursday. Elizabeth's father, Dale Olten Sr., has been in a Missouri prison since April serving a four-year sentence for drug possession.

| http://www.amw.com/missing_children/case.cfm?id=68930*snipped* The distance between the two houses was less than a quarter mile. Though Olten's walk should have taken no more than ten minutes, her parents knew something was awry when she failed to return home in a reasonable amount of time. Less than 45 minutes after Elizabeth left her friend's house, her parents were on the phone with police, reporting her missing. Immediately, cops, firefighters, and volunteers blanketed the area, hoping to find little Elizabeth safe from harm. They say she disappeared somewhere in the area near Hwy. 50, between the 600 block of Rte. D and the 200 block of Rte. D. Though rain poured from the skies above, that didn't stop authorities from using a helicopter to find the girl, nor did it prevent searchers from working steadfastly through the night. As a precautionary measure, investigators have questioned numerous sex offenders in the area, and have looked in the nearby woods and waterways for any sign of the young girl. Though there seems to be no trace of Elizabeth in the area, cops have publicly stated that foul play is not suspected in her disappearance. | |

| http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/new...F?OpenDocumentVolunteers to resume search for Mo. girl, 9 The primary search on Thursday focused on a section of woods about half a mile wide and half a mile long, which police zeroed in on by triangulating the girl's cell phone location, White said. The phone has not been found, and the battery died by Thursday morning. Uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather were hindrances. David Wininger, a volunteer firefighter who helped look until early Thursday morning and returned after work, said it was "overwhelming" and "beautiful" to see the outpouring of assistance. Wininger, 51, said groups of searchers spread out in lines across fields and woods to cover every square foot. "It's very brushy. It's very hilly. There's a lot of rocks, trees and brush piles," Wininger said. "It's a very rough place to be." More than 200 volunteers showed to help nearly 100 emergency personnel, and some were turned away. That angered Gene Bauer, who drove 45 minutes from Eldon to help. Bauer criticized how the search had been conducted and said he would examine gravel roads on his own if needed. Vicki Olten, who is Elizabeth's aunt, called the girl a "tough tomboy," but that she was afraid someone had tried to hurt her. "I want my niece home. I want her safe," said Olten, of Russellville. "She's a beautiful young girl and got a full life ahead of her. She does not deserve this. Her family does not deserve this." The Missouri State Highway Patrol set up a check point on a highway near the house and interviewed motorists. The Patrol used a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar on Wednesday, but poor weather prevented a repeat of that on Thursday. Officials hoped it could be used again Friday. A police tip line for those with information is: 866-362-6422. | |

| Police find body of missing 9-year-old Mo. girl Sat Oct 24, 12:06 am ET ST. MARTINS, Mo. – The body of a missing 9-year-old girl was found in a wooded area near Missouri's capital city on Friday, two days after she was last seen walking from a neighbor's home, police said. Cole County Sheriff Greg White said a juvenile, described as a "suspect," was taken into custody. The juvenile was acquainted with the girl, Elizabeth Olten, White said. The sheriff did not give any details on how Elizabeth died or about the juvenile in custody except to say that the person lived in the area west of Jefferson City and was older than the girl. Police said Elizabeth's body was found just before 3 p.m. "We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest," White said. "Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body." (More at link) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091024/...ouri_girl_dead | |

In one text, an alleged friend wrote, “She told my friend that she wanted to commit a murder to see if she could get away with it” and, “She told this to many kids at her school”.

| TRAGIC UPDATE: As if this thing could not get any worse. I had heard that a writing teacher at the high school committed suicide after the murder. What is now being confirmed is that the perpetrator turned in a paper that in some way detailed the intent of her crime. This teacher by all accounts was a wonderful, ethical teacher. My mom was telling me he marched with MLK and even went to jail for protesting during the Civil Rights era. Apparently, he blamed himself for not recognizing the paper for what it was. More details have come out about the details of the killing and the gravesite, but I don't want to say too much until police release those details. These are all through the grapevine at this point. But if they are true, the level of planning on behalf of the perpetrator is absolutely unbelievable. http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=34186434&postcount=33 | |

However, Cole County Sheriff Greg White revealed: "We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest. Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately, they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body." White said the body had been very well hid in the woods in an area that had previously been searched. Elizabeth Olten disappeared on October 21 about 6:15 p.m. while walking home from a friend's house. She never made it home and by 7 p.m., because 9-year-old Elizabeth was afraid of the dark and the woods by which she walked home, the Olten family called the police. Searches had revealed nothing. It wasn't until the suspect was interviewed that police were able to recover the body of the missing child. According to ABC News, the suspect's attorney, Kurt Valentine, said, "It will be the judge's obligation to look at the individual and look at her, excuse me, look at the juvenile's circumstances." Valentine also said, "I would ask that they wait, that they listen to the facts as they come out and not judge quickly. Learn about this person, learn about this child. You're dealing with a child." | The accused killer is reportedly the older sister of Elizabeth's friend. The 15-year-old girl accused of murdering Elizabeth Olten is reportedly the older sister of the girl she was playing with the day she was killed. The girl was not granted her release in a closed hearing yesterday. However, a judge ruled that her hearing scheduled for November 18 will be open to the public. That will determine if the girl is tried as an adult. But the judge is barring recordings and photographs. Kurt Valentine, the teen's lawyer, argued against the ruling, saying the publicity would hinder the girl's chances for a fair trial. "There's been a lot of speculation, but now we will have in giant headlines my client's name," Valentine told the Associated Press. "There is no way in the world that could possibly be in the best interest of this particular juvenile." http://www.truecrimereport.com/2009/...arged_with.php

| Olten murder suspect certified as adult By Newsdesk KRCG Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 8:25 a.m. COLE COUNTY, MO. -- Juvenile court authorities decided to charge a 15-year-old murder suspect as an adult at a certification hearing Wednesday morning. Alyssa Bustamante, of St. Martins, Mo., is charged with first degree murder of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten. Olten’s body was found Friday, Oct. 23 in the woods behind her home in the rural mid-Missouri town. Olten went missing walking home from a friend’s home on Wednesday, Oct. 21. That evening started a three day search with over a hundred volunteers, K-9 units and a helicopter. Olten was visiting Bustamante’s home when her family reported her missing. Bustamante lived down the street from the Olten family. Police found the body after written evidence led police to Bustamante. Bustamante, after talking to the police, took them where the body was concealed in the woods. There were two graves dug on the Friday, Oct. 16, the week before Olten’s death. At the hearing a highway patrol officers said that during that investigation Bustamante said she “wanted to know what it felt like.” Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson said that fact that Cole County Sheriff Greg White wants first degree murder charges shows that White believes Olten’s murder was premeditated. Family court Judge Jon Beetem decided that Bustamante will stand trial as an adult. However, Bustamante could still become eligible for treatment through the Missouri’s Division of Youth Services. "You'd have to have a certification and you'd have to have a finding of guilt," said Legal Counsel Samantha Green, "and conviction in the adult courts for dual jurisdiction." The judge heard recommendations from juvenile court authorities and weighed the specifics of the crime against Missouri’s ten criteria to charge a juvenile as an adult - Seriousness of offense and consideration of public safety if suspect should be transferred to general jurisdiction Whether the offense involved vicious force and violence Whether the offense was against a person or property, with greater weight given to offenses against a person, especially if personal injury resulted. Was the offense was part of a repetitive pattern of offenses, where the child may be beyond rehabilitation under the juvenile code. The record and history of the child in juvenile system and other courts will be considered The sophistication and maturity of the child as determined by considering home, other environmental and emotional conditions and pattern of living. Age of the child Consider the programs available to the juvenile system. Whether or not the child will benefit from treatment or rehabilitation programs available to the court. Racial disparity and certification. Bustamante has been in juvenile court custody since she was arrested on Oct. 23. Bustamante has a history of mental illness. She attempted suicide in 2007. Since then, Bustamante has been under treatment. Bustamante attended Jefferson City High School. School friends said that she was nice and they do not understand what would have caused her to commit this crime. An adult arraignment is scheduled for today at 1 p.m. http://www.connectmidmissouri.com/ne...aspx?id=378814 | |

| http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news...eople_49435906Missouri Girl Said Hobby Was 'Killing People' Updated: Friday, 20 Nov 2009, 8:16 AM EST Published : Thursday, 19 Nov 2009, 6:46 PM EST On an Internet site, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante listed her hobbies as "killing people" and "cutting." It may have sounded like a teenage exaggeration, but authorities say she fulfilled her words. Even as new details emerge about the teenager charged with killing 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, many facts about the crime continued to be kept secret Thursday — and may never be released by authorities unless Bustamante goes to trial for murder. Bustamante, who had been in juvenile custody since leading police to Elizabeth's body Oct. 23, was certified Wednesday as an adult and indicted on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She is accused of strangling Elizabeth, cutting her throat and stabbing her. Online court records showed Thursday that a public defender assigned to represent Bustamante filed a motion seeking to have her placed in a state hospital for immediate mental health treatment. On a YouTube profile viewed by The Associated Press, which has since been taken down, Bustamante listed her hobbies as "killing people" and "cutting." A year ago, Bustamante posted a video to the site in which she appears to intentionally shock herself on an electric fence near her home, then goads her two younger brothers into doing the same. In court Wednesday, juvenile justice officials testified that Bustamante attempted to commit suicide in 2007 and had been receiving mental health treatment for depression and cutting herself. A police officer testified that Bustamante confessed to digging two holes to be used as a grave, then killing Elizabeth five days later without provocation because she wanted to know what it felt like. But repeated objections by Bustamante's juvenile justice attorney prevented the police officer from explaining why two holes were dug. Cole County prosecutor Mark Richardson also has declined to elaborate. "I know that, but I cannot go into those details right now," Richardson said. Asked if he could say whether Elizabeth's body was found in only one of those holes, Richardson paused for several seconds and again replied: "No, I can't tell you that right now." Richardson similarly declined to explain what the sheriff meant when he said last month that the investigation was aided by "some written evidence." The Cole County sheriff's office did not immediately return a call Thursday. Those kinds of details might normally be included in a probable cause statement from sheriff's deputies or police as a basis for a prosecutor to file charges. But in Bustamante's case, there is no probable cause statement in the court file, because she was instead indicted by a grand jury. Greater details of the crime also are included in Bustamante's juvenile court records, but those will remain closed under state law, said Cole County Juvenile Court Administrator Michael County. No further details are expected to emerge at a Dec. 7 status hearing in Bustamante's case. It could be months, maybe even a year, before a trial at which witnesses would be called to explain the details and circumstances of the crime. But no trial — or testimony — would occur if Bustamante were to plead guilty to a charge. Although he did not rule it out, Richardson said he wasn't inclined to agree to a plea on a charge of anything less than first-degree murder, which carries a sentence of life in prison without parole. "Because of the nature of the case, there is not a lot of room to enter into pleas," he said. | |

| 'Ride For Somer' Raises Money For Family Girl Disappeared Walking Home From School Last Month POSTED: Monday, November 23, 2009 UPDATED: 7:01 am EST November 23, 2009 http://www.clickorlando.com/news/21697125/detail.htmlORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Thousands came together in Orange Park Saturday to help out the family of Somer Thompson. The 7-year-old who disappeared while walking home from school in October was found dead two days later. About 1,800 motorcycle riders participated in an all-day poker run that ended at Whitey's Fish Camp, WJXT-TV reported. The event raised money for a trust fund for the Thompson family's other two children. Channel 4's Richard Nunn served as emcee. After the poker run, there was a candlelight vigil. Organizers said about 3,500 people attended the vigil. Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, was there and expressed her gratitude to the crowd for their support. "Without their support, I don't think I could make it through this. These people make me strong," she said. There have been no arrests in the case. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS. The total amount of reward money in the case stands at $45,000. | |

| Alyssa Bustamante, 15, Pleads Not Guilty in 9-Year-Old's Stabbing Prosecutors Say Girl Strangled, Stabbed Young Neighbor, Dug Ditch for Body Dec. 8, 2009 A 15-year-old Missouri girl pleaded not guilty today to stabbing and strangling a 9-year-old neighbor girl, and allegedly digging a ditch in which to bury her. Lawyers for Alyssa Bustamante entered a not-guilty plea to charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 killing of Elizabeth Olten, 9. Bustamante, who is to be tried as an adult, sat silently in the courtroom and avoided making eye contact. Authorities say Bustamante dug two holes before Elizabeth's death and later led them to her body. The teenager previously told state police that she wanted to know what it was like to kill someone, a highway patrol officer said. "Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like," Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified in court last month. http://abcnews.go.com/US/alyssa-bust...ory?id=9281521 | |

| Mo. Teen Charged With Murder Seeks To Move Trial DAVID A. LIEB, Associated Press Writer December 9, 2009 JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri teenager charged with killing a 9-year-old neighbor cannot get a fair trial in her home county because residents are biased against her, the teen's attorney said. Alyssa Bustamante, 15, is to be tried in Cole County on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 slaying of Elizabeth Olten. But her attorney wants the trial to be moved. "The inhabitants of this county are so prejudiced against the defendant that a fair trial cannot be had in this county," public defender Jan King wrote in a change of venue motion dated Tuesday. The Cole County prosecutor's office did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday. But Prosecutor Mark Richardson said last month that he would like Bustamante to be tried in the county seat of Jefferson City, which also is the state capital. Bustamante has pleaded not guilty to Elizabeth's killing. But authorities say Bustamante confessed in a police interview to slaying Elizabeth because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone. They contend Bustamante strangled Elizabeth without provocation, stabbed her and cut her throat. Hundreds of volunteers participated in a two-day search after Elizabeth disappeared before authorities say Bustamante led them to the fourth-grader's body in a wooded area near St. Martins, where both girls lived. The small town is just west of Jefferson City. King cited the publicity generated both at the time of the crime and at Bustamante's indictment last month while asking Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce to transfer the case. He attached copies of online public comments made in response to news stories posted by the Jefferson City News Tribune and the New York Daily News. Some of those comments refer to Bustamante as a "monster" and "inherently evil" and suggest she should be locked up for life. But it is not clear whether the people posting those comments live in Cole County, from where the jury pool normally would be drawn.Besides allowing a case to be transferred to another county, Missouri law also allows a case to be tried in the county where the crime occurred with jurors who are brought in from other counties. "Our belief is that the judge will make a decision that hopefully takes into account the demands upon the witnesses and victim's family," Richardson said last month. http://www.wftv.com/news/21907475/detail.html | |
