| Missing cancer girl's stepmother 'brands her the Dark Child on MySpace page' By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated October 13,2010 Zahra Claire Baker (10) 10/9/10 Hickory,North Carolina Missing 10-year-old Zahra Baker was branded 'The Dark Child!!! lol' on a MySpace page believed to belong to the girl's stepmother, it was revealed today. Elisa Baker has already confessed to police to writing a $1million ransom note that was found at the family's North Carolina home. Now the case, which has become a murder investigation, centres on the MySpace page apparently run by Baker under the username 'gothicfairy6668.' Missing: Zahra Baker, 10, was reported missing from her North Carolina home by her stepmother on Saturday morning The page is covered in gothic images including a skull and crossbones background and features a slideshow of what appear to be personal photographs including several of the missing girl. Much of the information on the page is about the stepmotherr - from her age of 42, her husband's name Adam, as well as photographs of him and Zahra. The last time the user logged on was October 8, the day before the little girl, who lost her leg and most of her hearing in a childhood battle with bone cancer, was reported missing. In the 'Details' section of the page, the user wrote that she's a 'proud parent.' Under 'Mood,' she wrote 'crazy."' Comments have filled the pages with angry tirades against Baker. Not found: Zahra had battled cancer over the past few years and was left hearing impaired and having to wear a prosthetic leg after she lost her left limb Though the girl was first reported missing on Saturday, police cannot find anyone outside her family that's seen her in the past few weeks. An extensive search -- which included help from federal authorities and volunteers -- has proved fruitless. Hickory police chief Tom Adkins today struggled to keep his composure as he confirmed he was changing the amber kidnap alert on Zarah. He said: 'The decision to focus this investigation from a missing child, or abducted child, will turn into a homicide investigation.' Adkins confirmed that Baker admitted writing the ransom letter which was found on the windshield of one of the family's vehicles. She has been charged with obstruction of justice in the disappearance. Home: Zahra, 10, was last seen at her house in Hickory, North Carolina (pictured) Zahra was last seen in her bedroom at 2.30am on Saturday morning, but police have cast doubts on the couple's account of events which led to the girl's disappearance. Adkins said: 'We understand the public wants to help find Zahra. The problem is we cannot confirm with any confidence how long she has been missing.' The ransom letter was addressed to her husband's boss David Coffey and said: 'Mr Coffey, you like being in control now who is in control we have your daughter'. It was also revealed today that police dogs searching for the missing girl have detected the smell of human remains on two cars at the house. Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins (pictured) said at a news conference officers were struggling to find anyone who had seen Zahra alive in the last few weeks A lawyer for Baker said today his client claims she had nothing to do with Zahra's disappearance. Attorney Scott Riley told ABC News: "I spoke to her at 3 a.m. this morning. I went to see her at 7 a.m.. She still hadn't had any sleep. She's very emotional, very upset." Police are now also looking into allegations by several former neighbours of the disabled 10-year-old that she was abused by her stepmother before her disappearance. They have suggested the stepmother struck the young girl . 'Just the way she yelled and screamed at her, and I did see her hit the child a couple of times,' Renee Bobbitt, told ABC News. Worried dad: Adam Baker has claimed his wife could have been behind his daughter's disappearance 'I should have called and said something then. I wish I had a million times, because no child deserves anything like this. And it's really got the whole neighborhood upset because we all loved the child.' Zahra's father has declared on TV that his wife could have been involved in the disappearance of his daughter. He said: 'I wouldn't like to think so. On what I've heard so far, it could be possible.'. Police have admitted time is running out to find Zahra safe and well. Chief Adkins said:' The longer this thing goes, the likelihood [is] that this outcome will not be positive.' He revealed that 'some evidence' had been removed from the Bakers' home on Sunday but would not elaborate on what connection a fire reported at the scene on Sunday had to do with the investigation.. Person of interest: Elise Baker was arrested on Sunday and charged with nine unrelated offences including writing bad checks and larceny Two and a half hours after Zahra was last seen by her stepmother at the weekend, police received calls of a fire in the family's back yard. Mr Baker said he was panicked after the fire, but did not immediately check on his daughter. According to neighbours, Mr Baker is from Australia and met his current wife Elise on the internet. Zahra's mother apparently lives outside the U.S. Zahra has been described as shy, home-schooled child who remained upbeat despite her health problems. | Update: Search For Missing NC Girl in Burke County WoodsThe stepmother of a missing 10-year-old girl has admitted writing a ransom note found at the family's home, authorities said Tuesday.
Tom Adkins, the police chief in the girl's hometown of Hickory, said investigators have been unable to find anyone outside Zahra Clare Baker's immediate family who has seen her in the last month. The investigation has shifted from a possible abduction into a homicide probe, he said, and an Amber Alert issued for the girl on Saturday will be canceled.
"We cannot confirm with any confidence how long Zahra has been missing," he said.
Elisa Baker, Zahra's stepmother, made the admission in an interview Monday night at the detention center where she is held on charges unrelated to Zahra's disappearance, Adkins told reporters. She then requested an attorney, he said.
Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Elisa Baker on a felony charge of obstruction of justice, Adkins said.
The chief said residents want to form search teams to look for Zahra, but said since police do not know when the child disappeared, they cannot select an area to search.
Adkins asked for anyone who has seen Zahra in the last month to come forward. Investigators have learned that an inspection may have been scheduled at the home, and are interested in speaking with the inspector, he said.
Zahra was reported missing about 2 p.m. Saturday. Police have said her father, Adam Baker, and stepmother reported she was last seen sleeping in her bed about 12 hours earlier, at 2:30 a.m.
According to a search warrant filed in the case, firefighters responded to a "fire on a mulch pile" at the home about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Adkins said "some evidence" was recovered from the scene.
Firefighters found a Chevrolet Tahoe with its passenger door open and a "Duke Power" [now Duke Energy] envelope with handwriting on it on the front windshield, the search warrant said. They notified police, who approached the SUV and smelled the odor of gasoline coming from inside.
The note written on the envelope was addressed to a "Mr. Coffey," identified in the search warrant as Adam Baker's boss, Mark David Coffey.
"Mr. Coffey, you like being in control now who is in control," the note said, according to the search warrant. "We have your daughter and your pot smoking red head son is next unless you do what is asked 1,000,000 unmarked will be in touch soon." In the bottom right, the note said, "no cops," according to the warrant.
Coffee and his only daughter were at the residence at the time of the fire, the warrant said. CNN affiliate News 14 Carolina reported Coffey owns the home.
Adam Baker called police about 2 p.m., saying someone had poured gas in his car and left a note saying they had his boss' daughter, according to the search warrant. Baker told police he believed the person who left the note had kidnapped Zahra.
The Bakers consented to a search of their home, the warrant said. A cadaver dog indicated the possible presence of human remains in or on the Chevrolet Tahoe as well as a burgundy Toyota Camry on the property, it said. Authorities were testing swabs taken from the Tahoe to determine if blood was also present, according to the warrant.
The girl -- a bone cancer survivor, according to CNN affiliate WCNC -- uses a prosthetic leg and hearing aids. The hearing aids have been found, but not the prosthesis, Adkins said.
Elisa Baker was arrested Sunday morning on four counts of writing worthless checks, said Eric Farr, a spokesman for the Catawba County District Attorney's office. Farr said she faces other charges in different counties, including a felony larceny count and other bad-check charges. She is being held on $31,500 bail.
Her court-appointed attorney on the felony charge, Jared Amos of Morganton, North Carolina, said Tuesday he could not comment on the case, as his representation is limited to that charge.
Adkins said Adam Baker faces similar charges, but police have held off serving an arrest warrant while he cooperates with investigators. And police said in a statement they are are "working several leads, specifically addressing Zahra's life before she disappeared."
Kayla Rottenberry, a former neighbor, told CNN sister network HLN that child welfare officials visited the Baker home twice. Elisa Baker told Rottenberry that someone "called and complained about black eyes and her keeping [Zahra] locked in her room," Rottenberry said.
"Her eyes had blue underneath -- not all around [her] eyes -- but her stepmom said her eyes got like that because she was sick," Rottenberry said. She said she saw Baker yelling at her stepdaughter as well, but didn't report the behavior "because they were already on her."
"Whenever she wouldn't walk right, she would holler at her," Rottenberry said. "She would fuss at her when she wasn't walking right and would ground her."
North Carolina's social services system is state-supervised but county-administered, meaning reports are handled in the county where they are made, said Lori Walston, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Human Services. However, she said workers are bound by strict confidentiality laws and would not be able to comment on the case.
An emotional Adam Baker told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday he can't be sure his wife is not involved in Zahra's disappearance.
"Until they've completed their investigation and can tell me some more, I can't honestly say," he said.
Zahra is described as about 5 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing 85 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
The FBI is assisting Hickory police in the investigation, officials said. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Hickory Police Department.

| http://www.heraldonline.com/2010/10/21/2547339/nc-girls-stepsister-dont-free.htmlN.C. girl's stepsister: Don't free my mother By Franco Ordoñez and Steve Lyttle - fordonez@charlotteobserver.comNEWTON, N.C. -- Zahra Baker's stepsister asked a judge Wednesday not to release her mother from jail, saying she feared for her safety and that of her own children. Amber Fairchild, 25, described her mother, Elisa Baker, as a potentially violent and unstable woman who has severed ties with her N.C. family and begun an online relationship with a man in London. Fairchild didn't specify why she was afraid, but a Catawba County prosecutor noted that Elisa Baker has had several allegations of communicating threats filed against her this year. Elisa Baker is being held on a charge of obstructing justice after police say she admitted writing a phony ransom note to throw off the investigation into her stepdaughter Zahra's disappearance, which was reported Oct. 9. Baker appeared Wednesday via video in Catawba County Superior Court, requesting that her $40,000 bond be reduced. But Judge Robert Mullinax found her to be a "significant flight risk" and instead increased the bond - from $40,000 to $65,000 - saying the allegations against her were "disturbing and unsettling." Also Wednesday, authorities began searching a Lenoir landfill for a "piece of evidence" they said could be critical to establishing an accurate timeline of Zahra's disappearance. They estimated the search of Foothills Environmental landfill could take up to five days. Elisa Baker's attorney Scott Reilly said after the court hearing that he doubts she will be able to raise enough money to pay for the bond. He also noted that Baker faces an additional bond of $30,000 in Burke County, where she has been charged with writing bad checks. Typically, to get out of jail, defendants must pay a bail bondsman 10 percent to 15 percent of the bond set by the court. That means Elisa Baker would have to come up with a minimum of $6,500 to pay her Catawba bond and another $3,000 to pay her Caldwell bond. Reilly said he and his client are looking for consistency and fairness. "We haven't seen the first piece of evidence," he said. But Assistant District Attorney Eric Bellas argued that Baker's bond should be increased after describing how Elisa Baker had met her current husband, Adam Baker, online while he was living in Australia with his daughter Zahra. Elisa Baker later moved to Australia to be with him, the prosecutor said, before the couple moved back to North Carolina in 2009. Bellas didn't spell out the nature of Elisa Baker's new online relationship. But Fairchild identified the London man her mother was communicating with as Kara Fullman, and said the man has sent Baker $10,000 over the past year until very recently. She didn't describe why the man would send her mother money. After the hearing, Adam Baker was at the family's Hickory, N.C., house removing belongings. He told the Observer he hasn't spoken with his wife since her arrest. Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said investigators are "hopeful" they might still find Zahra alive, but they continue to consider the case a homicide. The girl, who is hearing impaired and uses a prosthetic leg after suffering bone cancer, was last seen alive in public on Sept. 25, police said. At the landfill, Adkins said: "We're not looking for her body." Asked if investigators are searching for Zahra's prosthetic leg, he replied: "We're looking for a piece of evidence." Hickory police have requested information from an Australian medical facility that provided Zahra with her prosthetic leg, including the model, serial number and materials used. The announcement of the new search comes a day after police released recordings of two emergency calls made from Zahra Baker's home the day she was reported missing. In the calls, Adam Baker suggested that Zahra may have been kidnapped while he and his wife were dealing with a fire in their back yard. Adam Baker told a dispatcher that someone left a ransom note directed to his boss and landlord, Mark Coffey. Adam Baker said the kidnappers might have taken Zahra by mistake in an attempt to actually abduct Coffey's daughter. "I don't know if they set a fire in the yard to distract us to go out, and they snuck in the door," Adam Baker said. Elisa Baker described herself on what appeared to be her MySpace page as "Gothic." The page titled "MissGothicfairy," which has since been removed, included photos of Zahra and Elisa Baker. In one posting, Baker wrote "your kids rip your heart out." The page contained violent music and graphics on a skull-and-crossbones background. One photo featured a smiling Zahra dressed in black, with a caption that read: "the dark child!!!lol." In court, Fairchild was accompanied Wednesday by Elisa Baker's other daughter, Brittany Starbuck. Their brother, Douglas Proctor, also was in court. Fairchild testified that her mother never maintained a stable residence or a job. On Oct. 10, the day after Zahra was reported missing, Fairchild said her mother talked of wanting to move. "She said, 'I wish I could leave the state,'" Fairchild said. Staff writers Ely Portillo and Cleve R. | Police Find Missing NC Girl's Prosthetic Leg (Oct. 27) -- Authorities in North Carolina said today they have found a prosthetic leg that they believe belonged to Zahra Clare Baker, the 10-year-old disabled girl who is missing and feared slain. Hickory police made the announcement today during a late-afternoon media briefing at police headquarters. According to Hickory Police Maj. Clyde Deal, the prosthetic leg was found in a "brushy area" at a search site off of Christie Road. While authorities are not yet certain the leg is Zahra's, Deal said it is "consistent with what Zahra's would be like." Authorities are trying to match the serial number on the leg to hospital records to see if it is a match to the one that was fitted for the hearing-impaired girl, who lost her leg to bone cancer, WRAL reported. Meanwhile, the Raleigh News-Observer reported that investigators have returned to the Baker home and are digging in the backyard. Authorities are not yet commenting on what prompted the sudden search. These latest developments come just one day after authorities found a discarded mattress in a Caldwell County landfill that they believe could belong to Zahra. They also suspect the mattress holds evidence that could be relevant to the case, police said. "This mattress possessed DNA evidence that will be tested in the future to confirm if it is involved with this investigation," Hickory police said in a statement to AOL News. Zahra's father, Adam Baker, told police he last saw his daughter sleeping in her bed about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 9. He said that he and his wife slept in that Saturday morning and did not notice Zahra was missing until about 2 p.m. During the investigation, specially trained dogs detected the scent of human remains on property belonging to Baker and Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker. Dogs also detected similar scents during a recent search of property that reportedly belongs to a tree services company that employed Zahra's father for about the past six months, according to the Hickory Daily Record. On Monday, authorities arrested Adam Baker on charges unrelated to her disappearance. According to North Carolina media reports, Baker faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of failure to return rental property, two counts of communicating threats and five counts of writing worthless checks. Earlier this month, Elisa Baker was charged with obstruction of justice in the case after she allegedly wrote a fake ransom note to confuse authorities. The stepmother had previously been arrested on charges unrelated to the child's disappearance. Those charges include writing fraudulent checks, larceny and failure to appear. No one has been charged in connection with Zahra's disappearance, and Elisa Baker says she had nothing to do with it. Investigators said Tuesday that Baker and her attorneys have been "providing information" to police. "This information and all other leads are being followed up by the investigation team," Hickory Police said in a statement to AOL News. Deal has declined to elaborate on what prompted Elisa Baker to talk with police or what information she has provided to them. When asked during today's news conference if the stepmother had led police to the location of the prosthetic leg, Deal replied, "I cannot comment on that at this time," according to Gather.com. Adam Baker is being held at the Catawba County jail on $7,000 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Nov. 18. Elisa Baker is being held on a $65,000 bond. http://www.aolnews.com/crime/article/possible-dna-evidence-found-in-case-of-missing-north-carolina-girl-zahra-clare-baker/19691569 | |

| Police Confirm Prosthetic Leg Belongs To Zahra HICKORY, N.C. -- The prosthetic leg found off Christie Road in Caldwell County last week is that of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, police confirmed on Monday. Searchers found the leg on Tuesday and matched its serial number to the number on medical records detectives collected from Zahra's native Australia. A scanner was used to pull the serial number from a transponder inside the prosthetic, police said. Zahra got the prosthetic leg after losing her own leg to bone cancer. Investigators are continuing to search the Bakers' Hickory home for "additional evidence," police said in a release, but did not specify what that evidence is. Zahra was reported missing at about 2 p.m. on Oct. 9. Her father and stepmother told Hickory police officers that they last saw her sleeping in her bedroom at about 2:30 a.m. • VIDEO: Police Confirm Prosthetic Leg Belongs To Zahra http://www.wsoctv.com/video/25597830/index.html• RAW VIDEO: Police Announce Finding Prosthetic Leghttp://www.wsoctv.com/video/25540794/index.htmlLink:http://www.wsoctv.com/news/25595000/detail.html?cxntlid=cmg_cntnt_rss[/i] | |

| Wednesday, November 03, 2010 Zahra Baker: Bone Found to be Identified http://seamusoriley.blogspot.com/2010/11/zahra-baker-bone-found-to-be-identified.htmlBone found in search for Zahra Baker. It's being checked to see if it could belong to the missing. After a nearly monthlong search for a missing Hickory girl, police said Wednesday they have discovered a bone that might belong to Zahra Baker. Search teams found the bone in Caldwell County where police have focused the investigation in recent days, but police wouldn't say exactly where the discovery was made or describe the bone. Authorities sent it to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for inspection. They said if the agency determines the bone might be Zahra's, they will turn it over to the State Bureau of Investigation for lab tests. Also Wednesday, searchers drained a pond near Christie Road in Caldwell County, where they recently found a prosthetic leg that belonged to Zahra. Clyde Deal, deputy chief for the Hickory Police Department, said police drained the pond because "we want to be thorough," but it's unclear whether anything was found. The 10-year-old girl, who is hearing-impaired and had her left leg amputated due to bone cancer, has drawn worldwide attention since she was reported missing Oct. 9. No one has been charged in Zahra's disappearance, but her stepmother and father were arrested on other charges. Elisa Baker was charged with obstruction of justice after police say she admitted writing a phony ransom note to throw off the investigation into the missing girl. Adam Baker was arrested Oct. 25 and later released on bond for multiple charges, including writing worthless checks and assault with a deadly weapon. On Wednesday, Deal downplayed the significance of two letters a crime memorabilia website owner claims he received from Elisa Baker in jail. The letters, which became public on Tuesday and have not been authenticated by police, say Zahra is dead and her husband did something "horrifying" to the girl after she died. Deal said police decided not to send the letters to a handwriting expert so they could focus on the Caldwell County search. He previously had said police planned to compare the letters with other samples of Elisa Baker's writing. "It looks like we made the right choice," Deal said. "There are things more important" than the letters. Attorneys for Adam and Elisa Baker could not be reached for comment.

| Grand Jury Meeting In Zahra Baker Case Reports say a grand jury will meet for a second day
Multiple media reports say a grand jury will meet for a second day Tuesday as they consider possible new charges against Elisa Baker. She is the stepmother of Zahra Baker, a girl who disappeared in October and her scattered remains were later recovered. Baker already faces a charge of obstruction of justice after admitting she wrote a fake ransom note to throw off detectives investigating Zahra's disappearance. She has remained behind bars since her arrest, though her lawyers have filed for her bond to be reduced. The community around Hickory has seen an outpouring of support for Baker since she disappeared in October. Investigators eventually found her remains scattered across several sites in the area after she was dismembered. http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/Grand_Jury_Meeting_In_Zahra_Baker_Case_112857334.html

| Elisa Baker: Zahra Baker Died of Natural Causes Before Being DismemberedJanuary 07, 2011 Zahra Baker's stepmother Elisa Baker told a relative who visited her in jail that Zahra died of natural causes, after which she and her husband Adam Baker dismembered the little girl. According to a report from FOXNews, Boncetta "Buzzie" Winkler visited her niece Elisa Baker in jail this past week. While there, she claims Elisa told her that Zahra had been sick for a couple of weeks and then died of natural causes. Elisa and Adam Baker panicked when Zahra died, and then dismembered her body. Of course it's important to remember that Elisa Baker, Zahra Baker's stepmother, also lied to investigators and staged a fake ransom note when Zahra supposedly disappeared, to throw the police off track. Elisa Baker is imprisoned on obstruction of justice charges. That said, it's clear she is not someone whose credibility is reliable. On the other hand, it's not entirely implausible that this is the fate poor little Zahra Baker met. It seems that two other relatives of Elisa Baker told the Charlotte Observer that Zahra's parents didn't take her to the hospital when she became ill, because they feared authorities would learn that Adam Baker was in the United States illegally. Adam and Zahra were from Australia, and moved to the U.S. after he married Elisa Baker. The twists and turns in this sordid case are stomach-turning and heart wrenching. It became clear very early on in the Zahra Baker investigation that the little girl had been abused and neglected at the hands of Elisa Baker. A cancer survivor, Zahra wore a prosthetic leg and two hearing aids. She had faced more than her share of odds in her young life, and in no way deserved whatever circumstances that led to her horrid fate. No charges have been filed yet in the Zahra Baker murder case. It appears as though the investigators and the district attorney are being extra careful to dot all of their I's and cross all of their T's before issuing one or more warrants for Zahra's murder. Undoubtedly, someone will pay for the death of this precious child. The questions now are who and when? Photo Source: FOXNewshttp://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978886740 | |

| Stepmum told cops Zahra died in September Last Updated: January 18, 2011 Elisa Baker, centre, stepmother of Zahra Baker, faces court over an obstruction of justice charge, October 13, 2010 / AP Source: AP Zahra Baker's Hickory home. Source: AP Zahra Baker Source: Supplied NORTH Carolina police investigating the death of Australian girl Zahra Baker have looked into reports her stepmother and father talked in an online community about a "chainsaw massacre role play'' days before the girl may have died, search warrants have revealed. A stack of search warrants released on Tuesday also show that Zahra's stepmother Elisa Baker told police the girl died more than two weeks before she was reported missing. No one has been charged in the death of the 10-year-old girl, who had a prosthetic leg and hearing aides after a struggle with bone cancer. While the warrants released on Tuesday provide new details about the investigation, they don't reveal how Zahra might have died. Elisa Baker is currently in jail on charges of obstructing justice during the investigation. Her Australian husband, Adam Baker, is free on bond after being arrested on charges unrelated to his daughter. The warrants shed light on some of the chronology of the disappearance of the little girl, which has riveted the North Carolina town of Hickory, where she lived with her father and American stepmother, and her native Australia. According to two warrants, Elisa Baker told Hickory police in a November 19 interview that Zahra died on September 24, more than two weeks before she was reported missing on October 9. Elisa Baker also told police that Adam Baker dismembered the girl's body and that the couple disposed of her remains in several locations on September 25. Police found the girl's remains through information provided by Elisa Baker, who accompanied them to some of the sites. But the warrants go on to say that mobile phone records from September 24-25 show that Adam Baker wasn't in the places where Zahra's remains were dumped. Mobile phone records do show that Elisa Baker was in those places at those times, according to warrants. Elisa Baker's lawyers sought on Tuesday to have her bond of nearly $US100,000 lowered, but a Superior Court judge in Newton postponed a hearing on the request until March 7. Many of the documents unsealed on Tuesday show that police and prosecutors sought Elisa Baker's medical records from various local hospitals, and information from at least seven county social service agencies about prior investigations into whether Elisa Baker had abused her three biological children. Police also sought information from the Instant Messaging Virtual Universe IMVU website. The social networking and gaming site allows users to create three-dimensional avatars and communicate with each other. According to a November 8 warrant, police were told an IMVU user had a conversation with Adam Baker and Elisa Baker "regarding their involvement with chainsaw massacre roleplaying.'' "The date of September 22 was given regarding their virtual family 'doing a murder with chainsaws','' according to the warrant, although it isn't clear from the document what ``chainsaw massacre roleplaying'' entailed. Adam Baker moved to North Carolina from Australia with his daughter after meeting Elisa online. The little girl's death provoked an outpouring of grief in North Carolina and Australia, including candlelight vigils on what would have been her 11th birthday in November. The documents also reveal information about Elisa Baker's ongoing relationship with her former husband, Aaron Young. Elisa Baker was married to him before Adam Baker. The documents say Elisa Baker told Adam Baker that Aaron Young was her brother. Investigators said Elisa Baker and Aaron Young had been in contact even though they were estranged, and officers were trying to get his telephone records. "Obtaining Aaron Young's telephone records or telephone number will likely provide information substantially related to this homicide investigation,'' according to the court documents. But Christy Young, who says she is Aaron's wife, said he had had little contact with Elisa Baker. "I didn't know anything about this. | Baker Stepmum showing cracks January 05, 2011 US police investigating the death of Australian girl Zahra Baker have looked into reports her stepmother and father talked in an online community about a chainsaw massacre role play days before the girl may have died. Search warrants released today show Adam and Elisa Baker discussed their avatars on a roleplaying site committing a chainsaw murder on September 22. The warrants also show that Elisa Baker told police that Zahra died two days later and that Adam Baker dismembered her body and disposed of her remains the next day. But it remains unclear exactly how Zahra died. The stepmother of Zahra Baker has told police the Australian-born girl died more than two weeks before she and her husband reported her missing. According to a November 8 warrant, police were told an IMVU user had a conversation with Adam Baker and Elisa Baker 'regarding their involvement with chainsaw massacre roleplaying.' 'The date of September 22 was given regarding their virtual family 'doing a murder with chainsaws',' according to the warrant, although it isn't clear from the document what 'chainsaw massacre roleplaying' entailed. 'Obtaining Aaron Young's telephone records or telephone number will likely provide information substantially related to this homicide investigation,' according to the court documents. But Christy Young, who says she is Aaron's wife, said he had had little contact with Elisa Baker. 'I didn't know anything about this. What they're saying I don't think is right,' she told The Associated Press. Elisa Baker's indictment also included "aggravating factors," which indicates a history and pattern of physical, verbal and psychological abuse the victim, according to Al Jean Bogle, Clerk of Catawba County Court.
The indictment from the grand jury also said that Elisa Baker "desecrated the victim's body to hinder detection..." Zahra's body was dismembered after her death -- and her remains have been found in at least 2 places.
Hickory Police say that they will hold a press conference Monday at 3 pm to talk about the case involving Zahra, a 10-year-old girl who went missing and was found dismembered.

The bond for Elisa Baker was immediately increased by $200,000 as the charge was added to the Catawba County jail website, bringing Elisa Baker's total bond to $307,700 on 17 different charges.
Elisa Baker has lead police to the remains of Zahra, which were found in different areas. She also told police that Zahra's body was disposed after she died of "illness," according to court documents.
On Sunday evening, Adam Baker spoke to 60 Minutes Australia about the death of his daughter, Zahra. Elisa Baker was already facing charges involving a fake ransom note.

60 Minutes Australia is a current affairs program which is based on the CBS version in the United States with the same name.
Adam and Zahra were from Australia and they moved to Hickory about two years ago.
"Zahra had been my life you know, and now she's gone," said Adam Baker, who has not been charged in the case. "I don't know what to do. I feel very, very empty."
In October of 2010, Adam called 911 and reported Zahra missing.
Police say shortly thereafter, Adam's wife, Elisa, admitted to writing a fake ransom note. She was jailed on unrelated charged. Eventually, Elisa led investigators to Zahra's scattered remains.
Court documents show Elisa told police she and Adam chopped up Zahra and dumped her remains after the young girl died from an illness.
In the 60 Minutes interview, Adam Baker said, "That's the biggest lie she ever told."
Elisa remains in jail, but no one has been charged with the girl's murder at this time.
Adam told 60 Minutes, it is difficult for him to be here in the U.S. where people think he is a murderer.
When asked about his alleged involvement in her death, Adam said he had no part in any of it, and that he didn't feel there was a case against him.
"I had no part in my daughter's death or dismemberment," he said.
Adam also said he believes Elisa did play some role in Zahra's death and disappearance, and he believes she would still be alive today if he had never brought Elisa into their lives.
Once the trial is over, Adam said he plans to take Zahra's remains back to Australia and try to move on with what is left of his life.
Because of ongoing legal issues here in the United States, WBTV is not able to provide a full transcript, or the full video, of the interview.

| RAW VIDEO: Elisa Baker Nearly Collapses In Court Elisa Baker, who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her stepdaughter, nearly collapsed in a courtroom during a hearing Monday. http://www.wsoctv.com/video/27426923/index.htmlNEWTON, N.C. -- Elisa Baker, who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her stepdaughter, nearly collapsed in a courtroom during a hearing Monday. RAW VIDEO: Elisa Baker Nearly Collapses In Court Baker is charged in the death of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, whose remains were found in November of last year. After standing in front of a judge for nearly 15 minutes, Baker, who was in shackles, became unsteady on her feet, nearly hitting her head on a table before her attorney grabbed her. He helped her to a chair, where she was given some water. “The hearing got a little lengthy (and) a little bit heated and I think she was overcome and needed to sit down for a moment,” Baker’s attorney, Scott Reilly, said. In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Baker faces an obstruction of justice charge. Investigators said she wrote a bogus ransom note the day Zahra was reported missing. District Attorney Jay Gaither is pushing for the cases to be heard soon. “After these motions are heard, it is our intention to put this matter on for trial as quickly as possible. Expeditiously as possible,” he said. During the hearing, Reilly said he will push to move any trial out of Catawba County because of all the publicity the case has received. “I think she is being treated differently, quite frankly, and I want to ensure that doesn't happen,” Reilly said. He described the actions of the District Attorney’s Office in indicting Baker on more than a half-dozen felonies as selective prosecution. Gaither disagreed. “He'd be incorrect in saying that,” Gaither said. “We look at cases (and) if there's probable cause, we indict those cases." Judge Eric Levinson postponed other hearings on murder and obstruction of justice charges until June 27. The judge said he must wait for Reilly to file the change of venue motion. http://www.wsoctv.com/news/27423503/detail.html | |

| Stepmother gets up to 18 years in girl's killingBy MITCH WEISS, Associated Press. – Sep 15, 2011 NEWTON, N.C. (AP) — Staring angrily, Adam Baker confronted his wife in a courtroom Thursday after she admitted to murdering his 10-year-old disabled daughter and scattering her remains in the western reaches of North Carolina. "There are no words to explain the hate I have for you," he told Elisa Baker, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with aggravating factors that included desecrating the body of Zahra Baker, the freckle-faced girl who used a prosthetic leg and hearing aids after a bone cancer fight. Elisa Baker also pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and to charges unrelated to Zahra's death, including obtaining property by false pretenses, financial identity fraud and bigamy. She was sentenced to up to 18 years in prison. Elisa Baker sat in the courtroom teary-eyed before making her plea deal with prosecutors. Zahra Baker's biological mother, Emily Dietrich, traveled from Australia for the proceeding and wept when she heard details of her daughter's death recounted at the hearing. Dietrich called the 43-year-old defendant "pure evil" and the slaying a "heinous act." "My only hope now is she (Zahra) is in a place where she never feels pain. ... In a place where she can feel my love," she said. Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid said the crime would haunt the community for years. "What kind of person would take the life of an innocent child?" he said. Adam Baker, who came to the U.S. from Australia with his daughter in 2008 after meeting Elisa online, faces multiple criminal charges of his own, although none are related to his daughter's death. Standing mere feet from Elisa Baker, he told her she had ruined his life. He also said Zahra had looked up to her stepmother, adding: "I trusted you with the most precious person in my life." "Zahra will never get to go to high school, never have a real boyfriend, never get married and never have children," he said. Afterward, he said he wasn't sure justice was done. "It's pretty sad when you get less than 20 years for taking a girl's life," he said. Elisa Baker's guilty plea comes nearly a year after Zahra was reported missing from her home in Hickory. Initially, Elisa and Adam Baker told police they believed their daughter had been kidnapped, but that story quickly unraveled as police arrested Elisa and charged her with forging a ransom note. More details about the case — including Elisa's abuse of Zahra — were revealed during the hearing. Zahra's death was caused by "undetermined homicidal violence," medical examiners said in documents. An autopsy was conducted even though authorities hadn't recovered many bones, most notably the girl's skull, months after she was reported missing. Several bones showed cutting tool marks consistent with dismemberment. During the hearing, Dietrich and Adam Baker begged Elisa Baker to tell them where the rest of the remains were located. "What I truly want to see is Zahra be given the dignity and respect she deserves," Dietrich said. Elisa Baker's lawyer, Scott Reilly, said without his client's help, Zahra's partial remains might not have been found. He said his client was "truly sorry" for all the pain she caused and pleaded guilty to help bring closure to the girl's family and the community. Questions still linger, including why the child was killed. Police in court painted a picture of a woman who habitually bent the truth. Capt. Thurmond Whisnant, an investigator with the Hickory Police Department, said Elisa Baker told him the girl died Sept 24. Elisa told police Zahra was sick that day and went to bed shortly after eating that afternoon. About an hour later, Elisa said she checked on Zahra but she was "unresponsive." She said she tried and failed to revive the girl. She also claimed that Adam dismembered Zahra and disposed of her body in white trash bags, but Whisnant said that was a lie. Investigators found proof that Adam was working that morning with another man on a landscaping project. One of the biggest questions facing law enforcement was whether Adam was involved in Zahra's death, Whisnant said. Police believe he wasn't. Whisnant said authorities believe that Adam would leave the house early in the morning and return late at night. When he came home, Elisa told him Zahra was sleeping and not to disturb the girl. Police also described three cases where witnesses saw Elisa beat Zahra. Once the child attended school with two black eyes and was afraid to go home. It was part of a pattern in Elisa Baker life. The case revealed her as a woman with a troubled past, constantly shifting addresses and staying one step ahead of bill collectors and county social service agencies investigating reports of child abuse. The Associated Press found that she has been married seven times, including several overlapping marriages. During those marriages, former husbands told the AP that Elisa beat her three children and that social service agencies in several counties had investigated the abuse. Those who knew Elisa described her as an attractive high school student who became manipulative, cunning and insecure, struggling with obesity. By the time she met Adam, she had immersed in an online world of assumed identities and grandiose stories about her past, according to records and friends. Prosecutor James Gaither Jr. defended the plea, which stemmed in part from a deal his office made with Elisa Baker to help find the remains. Without her help, they probably wouldn't have found Zahra's body, and, in all likelihood, Elisa Baker would never have been charged in the girl's death. "As the district attorney, it is my responsibility to weigh the risks and the probabilities in every prosecution. The risk in this case was the Elisa Baker would entirely avoid responsibility for her part in the death of Zahra," he said. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jzqnCnkeBFTcTEaVJ8iU3eGivpsA?docId=44976c7783934df5bbdc4da97dbd5b7c | |
